Killed in the Crush: A Medieval Pre-History of Cinematic Special Effects

What is the nature and power of special effects that they induce such strong reactions in cinema spectators, and is it possible to trace this fascination back to the Middle Ages? I argue in this lecture that spectators during the medieval period may have responded to fantastical, supernatural, phantasmagorical, miraculous, satanic, or spectacular images with a similar sense of awe and wonder as contemporary viewers of cinematic special effects. Despite being very different experiences, they nevertheless often invite spectators to suspend disbelief and enter a semi-rapturous state.  We might profit from stepping into the seemingly remote field of medieval visual studies when thinking about the pre-history of cinematic special effects, less because of any inherently cinematic aspect to the images, but to dispel the myth that the allure of special effects is wholly within the domain of cinema and that artists weren’t exploiting the more embodied modes of viewing offered by special effects far earlier than the invention of cinema in the late nineteenth century.

PETER DECHERNEY

Auteurism on Trial: Hollywood’s 'Moral Rights'

From Douglas Fairbanks to Steven Soderberg, the U.S. legal system has treated Hollywood filmmakers as a special category of artist. When feature films have been translated to new media, from two-reel serials to home video, courts have consistently offered filmmakers unusually broad authorial protection for their works. In this presentation, Peter Decherney considers some of the reasons that filmmakers, and the Directors’ Guild of America, in particular, have been able to achieve special legal status, and I will consider some of the implications of their lofty perch for film on the internet.

Auteurism on Trial: Spielberg and Copyright

Steven Spielberg has been involved in copyright disputes over most of his films from Jaws to Amistad. He has also led the successful charge to secure special legal protection for film directors in the U.S., protection that far exceeds the rights of artists in every other field. University of Pennsylvania professor Peter Decherney examines Spielberg’s impact on copyright law and the place of the auteur in American culture.

The Role of Genre in Television Studies: The Case of the Cooking Show

Using the example of Julia Child's THE FRENCH CHEF TV show from the 1960s, this presentation will examine the role of genre in television and in television studies. We will address such questions as: Does "food TV" constitute a genre or set of genres? What is its place within a popular pedagogy of "do-it-yourself" shows? How does the evolution of food TV speak to changes in gender relations in America? What does the spectacle of food on the TV screen say about leisure culture and its history? The presentation sets out to examine the evolution of "food TV" and its implications for both television history in particular and U. S. cultural history and everyday life more generally

SLOUGHT FOUNDATION, PENN CINEMA STUDIES and ROMANCE LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT PRESENT

DANIEL BOHM

Daniel Böhm is a filmmaker based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His cinema explores the poetics of movement and psychological awareness. After his initial career as a psychoanalyst, Daniel Böhm studied cinematography and film directing at New York University. His short films have received international recognition, including a First Prize at the Joseph Papp Latino Film Festival in New York, a Golden Plaque in Chicago’s international Film Festival, and a Silver Lion at Cannes, among others. His latest film, Sólo Hombres Solos, is a dance-film triptych. Inspired by the photography of Duane Michals, the film explores three men who share an apartment, albeit unaware of each other's presence. They are each one and the same person, at different stages of life, whose paths unexpectedly intersect for a moment. The camera witnesses this instant through a poetic investigation on male bonding and movement.

JOSEPH ROACH

Shakespearean Romance: Chick Flicks of the Deep Eighteenth Century

The talk is based on my new research in the Hanbury-Williams letters at the Lewis Walpole Library. It will have Garrick's Lear and Winter's Tale (Florizel and Perdita) woven into the lives of Williams's two daughters, who write extraordinary letters to him reporting on the London stage; but they are really working out their deeply troubled relationship with their remote and juridical Papa. They use the plays as what I call "synthetic experience," braiding the pathos of the celebrity actors and actresses into their own tortured family romance (in a proto-Hollywood kind of fandom).

There will be a screening of the film It (Clarence G. Badger, 1927)
