Van Wert Film Collection
This project continues work begun in the summers of 2004, 2005 and 2006 when the family of film scholar William Van Wert donated a large collection of DVDs and videotapes (approximately 3,500) to the University of Pennsylvania. through the collaboration of the Van Pelt library and Penn's Cinema Studies program, the project will continue to sort, document, and catalogue this collection of often rare international films. The student assistant will research individual films in order to determine their quality and significance and to provide cataloging information for the library. As part of this work, the student will be exposed to the various issues and debates surrounding film historiography, specific national cinemas such as the French New Wave, film preservation, and the status of films and filmmakers rarely encountered within mainstream movie culture. Determining how and why some of these films are important will be one of the chief intellectual goals of this project. The schedule for the work is relatively flexible, but will most likely be spread through June and July.
Interested Penn students should submit a transcript, CV, to Cheryl Shipman, Ctr for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, University of Pennsylvania.
